 Invitation to Join SBDM:

We want to remind all parents that this committee has the responsibility and the authority of working together with the Area Superintendent, the Principal, and the teachers and staff to make decisions that will affect J.L.Long Middle School in this year and in the coming years. That is why we want you, the parents and community leaders, to help us make these important decisions.

SBDM is Site Based Decision Making is a process whereby school management takes place as a shared effort among school staff, teachers, parents, concerned community members, business representatives, school principals, and district superintendents."

In Texas, SBDM is required at both the school district level, and at each local school campus.

SBDM Committees address six broad areas: planning, budgeting, curriculum (subjects taught), staffing, staff development, and school organization. Thus, the vision of the principal, staff, and parents is put in working mode as we attack the areas of 1. safety, 2. academics, 3. character education.

Texas Education Code (TEC) Chapeter 11, Subchapter F, District-level and Site-Based Decision Making, discusses SBDM in broad terms, listed the responsibilities of the local scholl board....

SBDM membership is made up of 50% Staff and 50% Community, Business/ Parents + the School Principal. SBDM's diversity should reflect the school's diversity. There must be at least 10 people on the committee but there is no maximum number.

SBDM Officers:
  • Chair
  • Vice-Chair
  • Scribe
  • Facilitator / Time Keeper

Additional Members:
  • PTA Representative
  • Dad's Club Representative
  • Any other concerned Parents / Community Groups

SBDM will have at least 6 Subcommittees to address:
  1. Planning (school year activities, safety, etc.)
  2. Budgeting (grants, special funds, etc)
  3. Curriculum (subjects being taught)
  4. Staffing (teachers, monitors, special instructors, leveling, etc.)
  5. Staff Development (continuing education, special education, programs)
  6. School Organization (day to day operations / expectations)

Our Purpose:
"To provide and support a safe environment for learning (academics) and good citizenship (character education) to take place among the students, staff, and parents and and to embrace the diversity of our people." This is why we appeal to all parents' & student groups to bring their concerns.

Our Plan:
"To actively review our policies and procedures, to provide the safe environment for our students and staff and to promote the Best of J.L.Long to our community." We want to see what is working and what has not worked and provide changes. We want students and parents to take "active" pride in our school. We want to encourage the feeder elementary schools to "sell their students " on coming to J.L.Long and that our surrounding community / organizations take pride in it as well.
